Keeping cool in extreme temperatures

Brisbane-based signage and visual displays company Rapid Displays recently took on a large-scale project for Big Dog Pet Foods in Australia, where it faced the challenge of delivering a high-quality print job that could withstand extreme temperatures in the country.

The project in question was wrapping a 4m-long refrigerated truck, which travels around the state of Queensland delivering Big Dog Pet Foods’s range of raw pet food products.

Rapid Displays has worked with Big Dog Pet Foods on a number of other projects over the years and faced similar challenges in terms of delivering a quality print job at such large scale, as well as ensuring the application would stand up to the extreme temperatures of Queensland.

The state has an average summer temperature of 29°C, though daily temperature are often much higher than this, with Queensland’s record-high of 49.5°C set on Christmas Eve 1972.

For this wrap, Rapid Displays selected Drytac Polar Premium Air White polymeric self-adhesive vinyl for the main printed design, pairing this with Drytac Weathershield Gloss polymeric PVC overlaminate film for additional protection.

Graphics on the lorry trailer gave the clever effect that the wrap was being peeled back to reveal a giant packet of one of Big Dog Pet Foods’ products, The graphics were printed on a Roland TrueVis VG-640 printer/cutter before being applied to the lorry trailer, delivering a completely new look and helping to promote Big Dog Pet Foods while the lorry is out on the road.

“We needed a film that printed well and didn’t have a strong immediate tack,” said Tim Bateman, the owner of Rapid Displays. “We were recommended this product and found that it worked perfectly.

“The print quality of Polar Premium Air is second to none. For sharp, striking truck-side graphics, Polar Premium simply could not be overlooked in terms of white point, gloss level, and longevity.

“The quality of Drytac’s Polar Premium Air’s egress and clean removing adhesive made the installation much easier compared to other competing brands, while Drytac Weathershield Gloss is a dedicated matched component and protective UV overlaminate for seven-year protection.

“Both films combined really created the ‘wow’ factor on this project!”

Rapid Displays has been using Drytac products on a range of projects for just over a year and Bateman said that the company has felt the benefit the materials offer in terms of flexibility and reliability in both large-scale project like this and smaller jobs.

“We have also been using the Drytac SpotOn products for Big Dog Pet Foods, wrapping their freezers for point-of-sale graphics inside shops,” Bateman said. “We love both of the products and would have no reason to use anything else.”
