British luxury automotive brand Rolls-Royce marked the launch of its first fully electric car by wrapping one of the new models in a unique design that gave the effect that words were shining out of the vehicle.

One of the most famous brands in the automotive world, Rolls-Royce is known all around the world for its luxurious vehicles, with its cars being used to carry some of the most famous names on the planet.

However, in recent years, the pressure has been cranked up on car manufacturers to switch their attention to developing electric vehicles, due to an increasing demand from consumers for more planet-friendly ways of travel as attitudes towards the environment change.

Some brands have already made the move to electric and releases a number of new models in recent years. Not one to be left behind, Rolls-Royce has followed suit with the unveiling of the new Rolls-Royce Spectre, its first fully electric car.

The launch fulfilled a promise by Rolls-Royce chief executive Torsten Müller-Ötvös, who had pledged to bring an electric car to market before the end of the current decade. Rolls-Royce committed significant funds and development resources to the project, with the Spectre car being the result.

Unveiling the new model, in the autumn of 2021, the Rolls-Royce Spectre was launched with a unique wrap covering the entire vehicle. The design featured some of the words spoken by Rolls-Royce co-founder Charles Rolls in the 1900s, when he foresaw the electric future of motorised travel.

The wrap gives the effect that words are shining out of the vehicle, almost in a way that the car is a mobile digital screen. The clever blurred effect around each letter in the words makes it seem that even the bodywork of the car, like its engine, is electric.

“Today is the most significant day in the history of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars since 4 May 1904,” Müller-Ötvös said on the day of the first unveiling. “On that date, our founding fathers, Charles Rolls and Sir Henry Royce, first met and agreed that they were going to create 'the best motor car in the world.'

“It was Charles Rolls who truly prophesied an electrified future for automobiles. In April 1900 he experienced an early electric motor car named the Columbia and declared its electric drive to be ideal.

“Rolls said, 'The electric car is perfectly noiseless and clean. There is no smell or vibration, and they should become very useful when fixed charging stations can be arranged. But for now, I do not anticipate that they will be very serviceable – at least for many years to come.'

“Now is the time to change the course of the future of luxury. We embark on this bold new future with a huge advantage. Electric drive is uniquely and perfectly suited to Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, more so than any other automotive brand. It is silent, refined and creates torque almost instantly, going on to generate tremendous power.”

The Spectre has undergone intensive testing to ensure it performs as well, and if not better, than traditional fuel-powered Rolls-Royce cars. Global testing will, in total, cover 2.5 million kilometres – a simulation that the manufacturer said equates to 400 years of use.

Should testing prove successful, Rolls-Royce plans to roll out the new Spectre in the fourth quarter of 2023.
