ScotRail, the company that operates Scotland’s national rail service, recently joined forces with commercial graphics and visual communication business Aura Brand Solutions to decorate one of its trains with a special ‘Pride’ wrap.

The ‘Pride of ScotRail’ project was formed to help mark this year’s Pride Month, an initiative dedicated to celebrating the global LGBTQ+ community, with events staged all around the world.

ScotRail chose to wrap one of its Class 334 electric trains with the new ‘Progress’ flag, which was brought in to replace the traditional rainbow pattern. The Progress design features a number of additional stripes and colours to represent the entire LGBTQ+ community.

The project took its name from the train operator’s Pride of ScotRail employee network for LGBTQ+ people and allies, which played a major role in creating the design for the wrap.

“Scotland’s Railway is for everyone and, as part of Pride Month, we wanted to do something really special to demonstrate our support for Scotland’s LGBTQ+ community,” ScotRail media relations manager Russell Walker told the FESPA Wrap Masters website.

“OurPride of ScotRail” train was created by our own staff LGBTQ+ and allies network and designed by one of our talented team. It’s a visual commitment to our support and a reminder that we won’t tolerate bigotry or discrimination.

“Regardless of background or your identity, you should feel welcomed and safe when travelling.”

The wrap itself was produced and applied by Aura Brand Solutions, which is now something of a specialist in train wraps, having completed a number of similar projects across the UK in recent years.

Tim Locke, director for rail at Aura Brand Solutions, said the company was delighted to take part in a project that promoted such an important cause.

“I have worked with Scotrail for many years and so was approached by them to strip the existing livery being the Saltire livery then supplied the artwork by their own designer or which my designer then scaled to fit the train supplied,” Locke told the FESPA Wrap Masters website.

Aura Brand Solutions used films from 3M to complete the wrap, before applying it to the train. The wrapping specialist also supplied all fire compliance documents for the film being used, while 3M issued scaled visuals to allow Scotrail to put the new train design through the correct engineering change

The removal of the existing Saltire livery and application of the new Pride design took two days to complete.

The Pride design will remain on the train right the way through until 2029, when the metalwork will require repainting. The train will travel right across Scotland, serving destinations from Helensburgh, Motherwell and Milngavie, to Bathgate, Livingston and Edinburgh.
